July 1989
University of Minnesota researchers are calibrating a low-light camera to study auroras. A fortuitous event. A massive red-blue discharge, suspended above a tropical storm, captured by accident. Three milliseconds of existence. First scientific observation of a Sprite.
// 02 · MECHANICS
In the mesosphere
When a storm cell releases its lightning toward the ground, the atmosphere above reorganizes. At 50, 80, sometimes 90 kilometers altitude — where no plane flies and pressure is nearly nothing — electrons tear away from their nuclei. The red light is born from ionized nitrogen. The structure branches like an inverted tree: roots toward the ground, branches toward space.

Never twice
A sprite never appears the same twice. It cannot be photographed with a phone or a consumer camera. You need an ultra-fast sensor, a moonless sky, a storm falling vertically. And even then, many will miss it.

The festival is not a sprite. We don't claim to reproduce an atmospheric phenomenon. But we share its posture:
